Teaching Across the Sea 🌊

TEACHING PLAN

Plan to TEACH? Learn to PLAN!

1. Curriculum

Pelita Nusantara School  use the National Curriculum  in combination with the Cambridge Curriculum. In Cambridge Curriculum, there are four subjects ( English, Science, Mathematics and Health Education )which are being taught using English language as medium of instruction. I'm so blessed to be able to teach three subjects under Cambridge curriculum namely: Science ,Mathematics and Health Education.

2. Teaching Plan Related to your Subject

Teachers in the school prepared their lesson plans weekly. The format is somehow similar to the semi-detailed lesson plan in the Philippines. The lesson plan has different parts namely:

a.  the time or the duration of teaching the subject
b. the unit or chapter of the lesson, the goals or objectives
c. the class activities
1. Standard Mat
- pupils are given 10 minutes to read literature in their mini-library inside the classroom before the class starts.
2.lesson introduction
3. step-by-step procedure

- the part when class discussion and learning activities  take place.

d. after class preview
 - review notes, assignment and evaluation were given to pupils by the teacher.

I experienced making lesson plans using the format of  Pelita Nusantara School.

Here is the sample!

TEACHING PRACTICE

I wasn't born to "JUST TEACH"

I was born to INSPIRE OTHERS
to CHANGE PEOPLE
and to NEVER GIVE UP,
even when faced with
CHALLENGES THAT
SEEM IMPOSSIBLE.

My Lesson Plan (Absorbency)

( I used the Semi-detailed format of writing lesson plan that's being used in the Philippines.)

1. Procedures of Teaching

I narrated my teaching experiences to show how I handled my class and what were the teaching procedures that I did.

Last February 20,2020, I taught Primary 3b during their Science class. They did an experiment about absorbency. They tested whether the materials (tissue, plastic and sponge) can absorb water or not. They really seemed to have fun. After that I discussed the difference between absorbent materials and waterproof materials . Later on ,I gave a group activity wherein they listed down the absorbent and waterproof materials inside the classroom. We had fun. For their evaluation, I ask them to list down 10 absorbent and waterproof materials. The class that day was super fun.

The pupils were busy doing the experiment about absorbency.

The pupils worked together listing down absorbent and waterproof materials inside the classroom.

This was my picture while monitoring the pupils while their doing the activity.

The pupils were busy listing down 10 absorbent and waterproof materials in their respective houses.

Last February 21, 2020, I had a Health Education class at Primary 3b  and the topic was about Stranger safety. I taught them precautionary measures that they should do when approached by an stranger. They watched a video clip about it. I emphasized the slogan " SHOUT, RUN and TELL". When being approached by strangers, they should shout ,run away and tell their parents about it. I used authentic assessment in evaluating the pupils' understanding through a product-oriented task which was to make a poster or drawing about Stranger safety. They presented it in front of the class .The pupils' were also evaluated by answering their workbooks. I was so happy because the pupils were so active in the class and I discovered that they are good in arts. We all enjoyed the class and I know that their learning about stranger safety will be applicable to real life situations.

(I used the format of lesson plan of Pelita Nusantara School.)

I was discussing about precautionary measures when being approached by  stranger.

A pupil shared her work with the class about the lesson Stranger safety.

FINAL DEMONSTRATION

Before conducting my final demonstration, I made a detailed lesson plan using the format used in my school in the Philippines. I consulted it with my cooperating teacher.

This photo was taken during my informal interview with Sir Deki about the things that I should improve before the final demonstration and some tips on how to handle the pupils better.

The day before my final demonstration, I  became so busy preparing my instructional materials. Preparation is the key for a very good teaching.

These are my pictures while making my visual materials taken last February 25, 2020 at my dorm at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

The day of my final demonstration came I felt so nervous. The time allotted for my teaching was 8:00-9:30 am last February 26, 2020 and I'm going to teach about adding masses in Primary 3b in their Math class.

During the teaching, the procedures that I followed was based on the format that we are using in the Philippines. The class started with greetings and followed by opening song.

Then, it was followed by a drill. Drill is used to get automatic responses from the pupils. Drills are usually in the form of flashcards and the pupils will either read, answer a question or guess a picture printed on the flashcards.

This photo was taken when I did the drill       activity during my final demonstration.

Drill was followed by review wherein the pupils will have a learning activity about the previous lesson. The activity is usually done by groups.

The picture shows the pupils were busy   doing the learning activity for review.

The picture shows that I am checking the answers of the pupils to the learning                                       activity.

Review was followed by motivation. Motivation is the part where the teacher is trying to arouse the interest of the pupils to the lesson by activating their schema or having a fun and exciting game. During my demo teaching, I used the pupils prior knowledge about markets. I even shared to them that I went to Gegerkalong market, the market in the vicinity.

In the developmental activities part, I used real objects first to introduced the topic. Then, it was followed by discussion. After that, the pupils will try to answer some equations. Lastly,  the pupils will solve word problems.

Using fruits as real objects, I introduced the lesson .

For practice, the pupils did the fixing skills activity. I monitored them and they were allowed to ask for help if they can't answer the questions. After that, they have a group activity for the application wherein they answered two challenging word problems about adding masses. Then ,I evaluated the pupils learning through a worksheet that they answered individually. They submitted it to me for checking. Lastly, they copied their assignments that they will do at home for enrichment purposes .

2. Time Management and Organizing Activities

Indeed, the quotation "Time is Gold " is really true. Time is valuable to me as a teacher. Class time are only limited. I made sure that the pupils always learn something from our class each day. I tried my best to be effective in teaching by employing different teaching strategies and utilizing different methods so that pupils will learn. I also take note efficiency. Even if the time is limited, I made sure that they learn a lot. I never wasted any time and I became hands-on every class. I made the most out of all the time during my teaching practicum. I gave activities that were fun and exciting like Science experiments and poster making. Activities were fun but not time consuming.

3. Classroom Management

  5, 4, 3, 2,1 ...

I have observed that my cooperating teacher used this cue in managing the pupils. He always counts 5,4,3,2,1 if the class is noisy and disorganized and the pupils will automatically go back to their proper seats and keep quiet. I adapt this way of cue in managing the classroom.

4. Problem Solving While Teaching

As I look back,  it was really challenging to teach a class. The pupils have different personalities, needs and abilities. It's my responsibility as a teacher to facilitate learning inspite having diverse learners. I faced some challenges during my teaching practicum. I noticed that some pupils especially boys do not participate in class. They seemed bored and demotivated. I made a solution to address it. I used games to energized the class and gain their attention. I also gave the pupils group works wherein they have to work cooperatively with their classmates. I made the group works a competition. But, my aim was not to build misunderstanding among them but to make them united. At the end of it, as their teacher it doesn't matter which group won or who lose. The real purpose of it was for them to give their best shot and to show eagerness to participate. I also gave individual works like drawing or poster making and they have to share it on class. This activity was required so all of them have to do it. I was so strict about it that's why I roamed around the room to monitor everyone while doing the activity because I wanted all of them to participate. During the sharing time, some of them were shy maybe because they have to speak English in front of the class. For me,  I think my solution was effective because the pupils participated more because I'm  giving fun activities and utilizing games for ice breakers.

Being able to teach across the sea was such an overwhelming experience for me.
