  WARM WELCOME

On our way to Pelita Nusantara School last February 10, 2020 at quarter to eight in the morning,  Crystal and I were accompanied by our buddy, Rahma Fadhila for our first day. We rode a Grab car. I felt so nervous but at the same time excited because I'm going to learn a lot of things and meet new people in the school. Sir Arie, our mentor from UPI also came to formally send us to the school. We were welcomed by Sir Ben and Miss Amelia. Pelita Nusantara  was so welcoming. We spoke in front of the whole school after their flag raising ceremony. After that,  Sir Ben was the one who did the school orientation for us. He made a tour to the school vicinity and told us something about Pelita like the curriculum that they are using.

This photo was taken during our first day at the school. (Left to right - Miss TriRisky Amelia, school principal, Sir Arie Rakhmat Riyadi, mentor from UPI, Crystal Jeanne B. THE SCHOOL'S CURRICULUM

The school uses the National Curriculum from National Ministry of Education (Diknas) and combine it with both International Learning Curriculum under Cambridge International Examination, UK with the center number 1D257 and program called "Active Learning" with maximum capacity of 19 students (KG- Primary) each class.

The school is teaching four international subjects under the Cambridge curriculum using the English language as a medium of instruction.

TEACHING SYSTEM

The teaching system in the school is learner-centered. With the small class size, the teachers are able to cater all the needs of every learner. The teachers serve as facilitators of learning. They provide various learning activities in which the pupils will learn better.

MATERIALS AND OTHER LEARNING SOURCES

The pupils have their own textbooks and workbooks in every subject. The teachers hereby based the learning activities on the lessons on the textbook. The teacher also utilized video clips for supplement information to the textbook. Using laptop, speakers and LCD projector, the pupils are able to watch the video clips. Inside the classroom, there's also a mini -library wherein pupils can get books to read during their free time. The school has facilities for learning activities. It has a swimming pool, music room, library and computer room. The school also has a prayer room wherein Muslim pupils and teachers can pray.

The school doesn't only value academics. The school is  homey because it allows the pupils to have fun by playing with their friends. In fact the school has playgrounds where pupils can have fun.

MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION

The growth or progress of the pupils is being measured or evaluated using  workbooks, daily tests and mid or final tests. But the teachers also employ authentic assessment in the form of product oriented tasks (poster, drawings) and process oriented tasks (role plays, performances).

TEACHING PLAN

Teachers in the school prepared their lesson plans weekly. The format is somehow similar to the semi-detailed lesson plan in the Philippines. The lesson plan has different parts namely the time or the duration of teaching the subject, the unit or chapter of the lesson, the goals or objectives, the class activities such as Standard Mat, lesson introduction, step-by-step procedure and lastly after class preview wherein the review notes, assignment and evaluation are written.

Pupils  of Pelita Nusantara School

There are a total of one hundred forty four (144) pupils in Pelita Nusantara School. I also found out that there's an equal number of boys and girls in the school which is seventy two (72) each .

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSTEM

The school is headed by Miss Tri Risky Amelia. There are a total of nineteen (19) teachers in the school. The learning of the pupils in the school  is the teachers' responsibility but they have the  full support of the understanding and cooperative  parents of the pupils.

Pelita Nusantara's Dedicated Teachers

Teachers in the school prepared a weekly lesson plan before teaching in class. They use learning materials like textbooks. They also use technology  in delivering their lessons like PowerPoint presentation and video clips. The way of measuring the pupils progress is by the used of workbooks, administering daily tests and mid-tests or final tests. They also give performance based tasks for authentic assessment. No one is exactly alike as to no teacher is. Teachers differ in their ways of handling their respective classes and teaching their lessons. Below are some of my observations to the differences of the teachers in terms of teaching.

1. SIR DEKI

This picture was taken during Sir Deki's English class last February 12,2020.

MY OBSERVATION

Sir Deki is so good in handling his class. He really can manage the pupils well. One time the pupils got sleepy and bored and he used games to energized them and to get their attention. I also observed that oftentimes pupils in his class were playful that's why he frequently disciplined them but I know it's for the sake of his pupils. For that, I perceived him as the strict one. Despite being strict, he is still respected and loved by his pupils.

Sir Deki using some games to energized the pupils.

Sir Deki got sick and  not able to come to school for two days. When he came back to school, his pupils greeted him with hugs and smiles. I witnessed such a heartwarming scene.

2. SIR ANDREW

This picture was taken during Sir Andrew's English class at Primary 4b last February 13, 2020.

MY OBSERVATION

Sir Andrew is also a strict teacher based on my observation. He was so eager to make the pupils learn especially by themselves or by the help of their peers through sharing of ideas. I really liked about his teaching style is that he always emphasizes lessening the " TTT" or the teacher's talking time. The pupils are learning to learn by themselves and enhances their communication skills by gathering or sharing ideas to their classmates. He encourages independent learning and collaborative learning that's why I am really amazed.

ACTIVITIES IN THE SCHOOL

Last February 28, 2020, Pelita Nusantara School had a fun hour wherein everyone shared and  ate   traditional Indonesian food. I enjoyed participating in the said activity because I ate delicious food and have fun interacting with the kids of the whole school. I was like a celebrity because the pupils keep on giving me food. It was such a happy day because my heart was full of happiness and my stomach was so full also.

It's okay to have a not so good picture as long as you're eating a very good food.

Last March 2, 2020, I together with Crystal attended the flag raising ceremony in the school. Their flag raising ceremony happens only once a week every Monday morning. I was so happy because Primary 3b class led the ceremony.

The picture shows the three boys , Farand, Arung and Vino raising the flag of Indonesia. Sir Deki was also seen in the picture

Sir Hassan holding the microphone for Rakha during the ceremony.
